White-breasted Nuthatch
high confidenceSitta carolinensis
A compact, short-tailed songbird perched on the rim of a tray feeder, showing the classic nuthatch silhouette: a long, straight, slightly upturned dagger-like bill, almost no neck, blue-gray upperparts, a clean white face and underparts, and a dark cap extending onto the nape. The stubby tail and chunky, wedge-shaped body clinched the identification.
Other possibilities:
- Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis) — Similar shape and posture, but it is smaller and would show a bold black eyeline and rusty underparts, which are not evident here.
- Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) — Also gray-and-white with a dark cap and common at feeders, but has a much shorter bill, a black bib, and a proportionally longer tail.
