Northern Cardinal
high confidenceCardinalis cardinalis
A brilliant all-red songbird perched on the rim of a hanging feeder tray against a wooden fence. The pointed head crest, stout conical bill, black facial mask around the bill, and long tail are diagnostic of an adult male Northern Cardinal.
Other possibilities:
- Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra) — Also an all-red songbird, but lacks a crest and black face mask and has a paler, heavier bill.
- Vermilion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus obscurus) — Bright red plumage, but much smaller with brown back and wings and a thin flycatcher bill.
