Great Blue Heron
medium confidenceArdea herodias
A large, long-legged wading bird standing hunched on a submerged rock in fast-flowing water. The slate-grey body, paler grey wing coverts, retracted S-curved neck, dark crown stripe and heavy dagger-like bill are all consistent with a heron in hunting posture. Size relative to the river and the greyish plumage favour a Great Blue Heron (or its Old World counterpart, the Grey Heron, if the location is Europe).
Other possibilities:
- Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) — Nearly identical silhouette and grey plumage; would be the expected species if the photo was taken in Europe, Asia or Africa.
- Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea) — Uniformly dark bluish plumage could match, though this bird appears bulkier with paler grey wings.
- Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) — Hunched posture and dark crown with grey back are suggestive, though the neck and legs look too long here.
